Holbox is an island located in the north of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and is separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon that is only 10 km/6 mi from shore. The island itself is approximately 42 km/26 mi long and 135 km/0.09 mi wide. This magical little island gets its charm due to the unpaved, sandy streets and what seems to be endless pristine beaches. Though it’s a small island, it’s one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations, with countless beach clubs and extraordinary experiences such as snorkeling with whale sharks, kayaking, fishing, and the phenomenon known as bioluminescence. 

 

From the Cancun airport to Chiquila (the town where you would grab the ferry) is about a 2-hour drive. Once there, you will see that there are 2 ferries that alternate times, leaving for the island about every 15-30 minutes and the ride to the island is approximately 30 minutes. Arriving on the island, you’ll see a line of golf cart taxis ready to swift you off to your accommodations. Since the roads aren’t paved, the main mode of transportation for visitors is via golf cart taxi. You’ll spend about $50 to $70 pesos per trip, depending on where you are going on the island, but it’s cheaper than renting your own per 24 hours.
